Three ways to cultivate your talents and niche without being overwhelmed
When I began my decorative painting business, I thought I could “do it all”. I went on client appointments, made sample boards, brought to clients for consideration, drew up contracts, lugged supplies, ladders, and equipment to job sites, hired assistants, rendered finishes, packed and cleaned up, and negotiated contract payments.
Did I mention accounting, filing, and other traditional office tasks, operating the genesis of my concierge service, managing two rental properties, raising two boys, and taking care of a home?
Looking back, I wonder if I had a twin running around somewhere. It was all too much. I quickly learned one woman is not an island, and a change was necessary. So, I boiled down three fundamental rules to simplify a chaotic life:
1. When intuition calls, listen.
After several years of wearing all the hats, an opportunity came along to work for a well-established decorative painting contractor. It spoke to me – loudly. The stars were aligned, it felt 100% right, so I jumped at the chance. Huge exhale! All I had to do was show up and render the sample provided (and of course setting up and breaking down of job sites). It was one of the most memorable and rewarding periods in my career, and a choice well made.
2. Pay it forward.
I learned a valuable lesson. My style was best suited to be the creative on task. Not only did I not have the time for sales pitches, but also for commensurate negotiations. I just wanted to create, and have space to do my side hustles. Now I focused on utilizing my talent in the most productive way possible. Simultaneously, my small business concierge service grew, and it has been thrilling to help others get organized in their own growing businesses.
3. Science backs it up.
Yes, it does! The World Economic Forum states that what we know as intuition is actually your brain quickly processing information subconsciously. Emotions are not binary – and do not need to be ignored or corrected by rational faculties. The nagging feeling you ‘cannot do it all’ – is truly speaking to you to make a shift, and look for smart ways to alleviate unnecessary burdens while growing your clientele – and your confidence.
Fully ready and committed?
Follow your intuition to create the time and space to hone in on what you do best. In the meantime, don’t forget to seek out your own small business support! Consequently, you will create room to get the most done in the time we have.
Not surprisingly, you will better manage the rest of your own life. When the time comes to get “off the wall” and parlay your own creative energy towards meaningful endeavors, you will be fully ready, committed, and free 😅
